A P6 pupil from St Mary’s Primary School in Ballygawley has been named the winner of the Aer Lingus Arts for Schools competition.

Now in its 10th year, the art competition invited primary schools across Northern Ireland to submit a drawing of what they thought the world would look like in 10 years time and it was Lucy Lyons’ entry that most impressed the panel of judges.

Lucy and her fellow pupils at the Tyrone primary school first learned of their win by way of a surprise visit from Q Radio Show breakfast show presenters Stephen and Cate on the Q Radio Superbus, who broadcasted their show live from the school on Friday 15th December.

Aer Lingus will fly Lucy and her entire class for a once in a lifetime trip from George Best Belfast City Airport to London to spend the day at the Science Museum, taking a Virtual Reality space descent with astronaut Tim Peakes and visiting Tomorrow’s World.

Commenting on her win, an incredibly overwhelmed Lucy said: “I could not believe it when I got to school this morning and discovered I was the winner. My classmates were all chanting my name and I was completely shocked. We can’t wait to get on a plane and go to London. It is going to be the best day ever!”

Joining Lucy and her classmates in their celebrations, Principal of St Mary’s, Damien Cullen, commented: “There has been unbelievable excitement in the school this morning, for both pupils and staff!

“It’s not everyday that you wake up to find a radio station broadcasting from your school car park and certainly not everyday that a group of 10 and 11 year olds find out that they’re heading for an amazing trip to London!

We are incredibly grateful to Aer Lingus for creating this competition and giving us the chance to take our kids on the adventure of a lifetime. Thanks also to the Irish News and Q Radio for helping to promote this wonderful initiative, what a fantastic Christmas present, Ballygawley will be celebrating for days to come.’

P5 pupil Caileigh-Eryn Magee from St Teresa’s Primary School in Lurgan was named runner-up, winning a day trip for her entire class to the Armagh Planetarium.

Andrea Hunter, Judge and Business Development Manager at Aer Lingus said: “We were overwhelmed with the calibre and creativity of the entries from all the participating schools but Lucy delivered entirely on the brief.

“The judges loved her imagination and in particular her predictions that robots would be hired to do housework, we would be able to wear the Northern Lights and that Aer Lingus would install onboard swimming pools!

“We would like to thank all of the schools who entered and to the pupils who offered us a glimpse into how exciting their futures will be.”
